Rule Breaker 

“We should date.”

I nearly spit coffee at him. “What?”

He didn’t react to my near shout, speaking as if this were a completely normal conversation. “Pretend date. We convince Colt and his buddies that you’re with me, which should offer you a certain level of protection.”

I narrowed my eyes. “Because we live in a feudal society where my worth is tied to who I’m dating?”

“Because Colt fears me more than he wants revenge on you. At least for now. I don’t date, so we’d have to sell it, but I don’t see how that will be a problem.” Fire warmed his blue eyes as he met my gaze, and I felt that same jolt from last night.

The temptation was there, almost a physical need to agree and see what it would feel like to be on the receiving end of Soren’s dubious affections. That alone warranted me saying no, but I wanted to know the other side… and how far he’d go to sell it.

“How does this help you?”

“I’d get to parade you in front of my family.”

My brows flew up. “To piss them off or make them happy?”

He ran a hand through his hair, the first sign that he had stock in this conversation. “They’re threatening to cut my funding if I stay and play another season unless I show some sign that I’m considering a future outside of the NFL.”

I whistled low. “Did they give you any indications of what they’re looking for?”

“A serious relationship would go a long way toward convincing my parents I’m not partying my college years away while wasting my life with football.”

“I’ve never been much of a trophy girlfriend.”

A challenge lit his eyes, and he grinned. “I think we can work around that.”

That smile nearly had me changing my mind. Soren was an intriguing combination of bad boy and reluctant hero—and he made great coffee, a necessary trait in any pretend boyfriend. I blew out a breath and firmly locked that temptation away.

“I appreciate the offer, but I’m going to respectfully decline.”
